“Atypical Anorexia”: A Misleading Name for a Common Eating Disorder

When most people picture someone with an eating disorder, they imagine a very thin person. Unfortunately, this stereotype has caused countless people to go without the life saving care they need. The truth is that eating disorders do not have a “look”. People in midsize and larger bodies can experience severe food restriction, intense fear of weight gain, overwhelming body image distress, and serious medical complications while being overlooked or even praised for behaviors that are signs of illness.

Period Talk, Part 3: Hypothalamic Amenorrhea

Hypothalamic refers to the hypothalamus, and amenorrhea means the absence of menstruation (typically for three months or longer). Hypothalamic amenorrhea, therefore, means the lack of a period due to hypothalamic dysfunction.The hypothalamus is often referred to as the body’s “thermostat”. It regulates our body temperature, our breathing, and in the case of hypothalamic amenorrhea, the hypothalamus controls the release of hormones from the pituitary gland that are necessary for menstruation.
