Why Nutrition Needs Change With Age
As we age, a range of physiological changes affect how we process and require nutrients. Appetite often diminishes. Swallowing difficulties, dental changes, and medication side effects can make eating more challenging. Also, taste perception may change as we age. Social isolation and grief can reduce motivation to cook and eat. Chronic health conditions add layers of complexity to every nutritional decision.
A geriatric dietitian understands all these dimensions and works with older adults in a respectful, practical, and holistic way. Our goal is never simply to optimize a nutrient profile in isolation; it is to support overall quality of life, functional independence, and the continued joy of eating as people age.
What a Dietitian for Seniors Can Help With
- Addressing unintentional weight loss and malnutrition
- Managing nutrition alongside multiple chronic conditions (diabetes, heart disease, kidney disease, osteoporosis, and others)
- Medication-nutrient interactions
- Maintaining adequate protein intake to support muscle mass and prevent sarcopenia
- Bone health nutrition (calcium, vitamin D, and related nutrients)
- Dysphagia (difficulty swallowing) and texture-modified diets
- Appetite loss and strategies to maintain adequate intake
- Hydration in older adults
- Nutrition for cognitive health and dementia prevention
- Eating disorders and disordered eating in older adults, an often-overlooked population
- Supporting caregivers in meeting the nutritional needs of older family members
Eating Disorders in Older Adults
Eating disorders do not only affect young people, but they also occur across the lifespan, including in older adults. Late-onset eating disorders, as well as longstanding eating disorders that were never adequately treated, are more common than many people realize in the senior population. Our team is uniquely positioned to address this intersection, bringing both geriatric nutrition expertise and deep eating disorder specialization to older adult clients.
