What Is Intuitive Eating?

Intuitive eating is an evidence-based, mind-body framework developed by Registered Dietitians Evelyn Tribole and Elyse Resch, first published in 1995 and now in its fourth edition. It is built on ten core principles that help individuals move away from external diet rules and reconnect with the internal wisdom their bodies already possess. Research consistently demonstrates that intuitive eating is associated with improved psychological well-being, better body image, reduced disordered eating behaviors, and a healthier overall relationship with food, without the harmful physical and emotional side effects of chronic dieting.

Intuitive eating is not a diet, a weight loss strategy, or a prescription to eat “whatever you want” without regard for what your body is telling you. It is a practice of cultivating trust, trust in your body’s signals, trust in your own judgment, and trust that you do not need external rules to know how to nourish yourself.

Working with an Intuitive Eating Dietitian

Reading a book about intuitive eating is a meaningful starting point, but working with a trained intuitive eating dietitian provides the depth, personalization, and support that makes the difference between understanding the concepts and actually embodying them. Our dietitians bring extensive clinical experience helping clients navigate the challenges that arise when leaving diet culture behind, including fear of weight gain, social pressure, diet mentality relapse, and the grief that often comes with recognizing years of restriction or disordered eating.
Sessions are collaborative, non-prescriptive, and completely tailored to where you are in your journey. Whether you are brand new to intuitive eating, skeptical, or have been trying to implement it independently for years, our dietitians will meet you where you are.

Intuitive Eating Group, Healing in Community

We periodically offer intuitive eating group sessions led by our RDs, a powerful complement to individual work that allows participants to share experiences, normalize struggles, and find support from others on the same path. Healing in community is often more powerful than healing alone. Check our Nutrition Groups page for current group offerings, or contact us to be notified when a new intuitive eating group is forming.

Who Intuitive Eating Is For

Intuitive eating is appropriate for a wide range of individuals, including those recovering from eating disorders, those stuck in chronic diet cycling, those who feel disconnected from their body’s signals, and those who simply want a more peaceful and joyful relationship with food. It is, at times, not appropriate as a standalone intervention for those in active medical nutrition therapy for certain conditions. Our dietitians will always ensure your care plan is safe and clinically appropriate for your specific situation.

Intuitive Eating Dietitian, In-Person & Telehealth

We offer intuitive eating nutrition therapy in person at offices across the Triangle and in Charlotte, NC, and via secure telehealth throughout North Carolina and Oregon. We can also work with individuals in many other states, depending on each state’s dietetic licensure laws. Contact us to schedule your first appointment or to ask questions about whether our approach is a good fit for you.
