At Lutz & Alexander Nutrition Therapy, we often hear from clients who feel exhausted and feel they have failed the “medical industrial complex.” In North Carolina, many people are accustomed to large hospital systems like Duke and UNC, where health is often defined by a number on a scale. This traditional approach, often called weight management or weight-centric, assumes that weight is the primary indicator of well-being. However, we are not your typical dietitians. We understand the science of weight and health, and the harm that can result from defining health by weight. Your body is your most powerful ally in creating your best health; it is not a problem to be solved.

Defining the Weight Management Myth

The concept of weight management is built on the idea that every individual should be a certain size and can and should control their body size. The myth of weight management suggests that if a person is not losing weight or “controlling their weight”, they are doing something “wrong” with their eating and/or movement. This perspective is not only clinically limited, but can also be deeply harmful to your physical body and your relationship with food and your body.

In reality, many factors affect our health.  These include genetics, social determinants of health, environmental factors, trauma experience, and behaviors.  When the medical system focuses solely on weight management, it often ignores these complexities, leading to a cycle of shame and failed interventions that have little to do with actual health outcomes.

Weight-Inclusive Care: A Better Way Forward

We practice with an exclusively non-diet, weight-inclusive approach. This shift in perspective is the foundation of our philosophy. Weight-inclusive care means we prioritize health behaviors and internal cues over external metrics like BMI or weight. We believe that everyone deserves respectful, compassionate care regardless of their body size, race, culture, gender, physical ability, cognitive ability, or socioeconomic background.

While the traditional medical model might tell you that your body is “failing” if it doesn’t fit a specific mold, we believe the ability to trust your body’s wisdom is still within you. We support you in learning how to nourish and care for your body in ways that support your true health. This is the foundation of your best health.

Why We Distinguish Ourselves from Major Hospital Systems

Large medical systems often rely on a weight-normative approach because it is easier to track in a high-volume clinical setting. However, this approach frequently fails individuals struggling with disordered eating or body image concerns. Our Registered Dietitian Nutritionists have a unique passion for helping people cut through the clutter of confusing and alarming nutrition messages to find a way of eating that actually works.

In a weight-inclusive model, we focus on:

  • Internal Cues: Learning to interpret what your body is telling you rather than following a rigid set of rules.
  • Compassion and Sensitivity: Approaching nutrition with empathy and understanding rather than judgment or “policing”.
  • The Science of Nutrition: Looking at the latest nutrition research to help support your goals and cut through the many nutrition myths out there.
  • Support Where You Are: Helping you make realistic, practical changes that fit your unique life – and tuning into what your body is telling you.
