Over the past 12 years of treating patients with eating disorders, more than half have been children and teens between the ages of 10-17 years old. Working with this age group means that I spend as much if not more time with their parents and caregivers helping them understand their child’s diagnosis while navigating first steps of a treatment plan and beyond.
Ah, a new year. A new calendar. And with these things, a cultural increase in commitment to making changes to diet and exercise. You are under no obligation to make any changes to how you eat or exercise this month, or any month, of the year. However, if you are wanting to make a change that’s not rooted in diet culture, where might you start?
Hypothalamic refers to the hypothalamus, and amenorrhea means the absence of menstruation (typically for three months or longer). Hypothalamic amenorrhea, therefore, means the lack of a period due to hypothalamic dysfunction.The hypothalamus is often referred to as the body’s “thermostat”. It regulates our body temperature, our breathing, and in the case of hypothalamic amenorrhea, the hypothalamus controls the release of hormones from the pituitary gland that are necessary for menstruation.
